About
M A F YOUNUS, PhD, an Australian, was born in Bangladesh in 1966, is currently a Research Fellow at the discipline of Geography, Environment and Population, The University of Adelaide,South Australia. He became a Lecturer (Semester) in the school of Environment, Flinders University, South Australia. He obtained his Bachelor of Science with Honours and Master of Science with thesis degrees in Geography from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh; and in both degrees he received first class. He was also awarded the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Geography from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. He also obtained PhD in Geography and Environmental Studies from the University of Adelaide in 2010. He resumed his career as a graduate level lecturer in Tejgaon College in Dhaka and later worked as a Research Fellow in Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP) (Centre for Research and Action on Environment and Development). He was assigned as a team member with various international research activities, such as: International Water Management Institute-BUP-ADB: Pro-poor Intervention Strategies in Irrigated Agriculture in Asia, World Meteorological Organization-BUP: Community Approaches to Flood Management in Bangladesh, India and Nepal, BUP and Global Water Partnership (GWP): Assessment of Capability of Existing Institutions Dealing with Flood Management and Identify the Gaps Therein, BUP and the University of Waikato, NZ: Greenhouse Effect and Climate Change. He has presented papers in various international seminars in USA, Norway, Australia, Bangladesh and UK; these have been published in various national and
international journals and also in the Web. Younus has also a good link with the various international organizations’ activities, such as: GECHS, IHDP and IPCC. He has membership / life-membership with the Institute of Australian Geographers, The International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) and ANZSEE (Executive Member), Planning Institute of Australia, Bangladesh Geographical Society, Bangla Academy, Community Health Research Association-Bangladesh,Society for International Development-Bangladesh Chapter, NZ Geographical Society (1999-2001) and Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (1995). He has keen interest on the issues of climate change and adaptation, flood adaptation, health inequality and urban planning and development. Younus worked with Professors Q K Ahmad, K B S Rasheed, Richard Warrick, Munir Morad, Richard Bedford, Martin Williams and Nick Harvey.
Currently Younus lives in Adelaide, Australia with his wife and three children: Farah, Anika and Zoheb.
